Getting a Visa

Helpful Tips Concerning Your Visa

We suggest that you get extra copies of your photo and bring them and a copy of the first page of your passport with you to China in case you lose your passport while traveling. On the visa application make sure you say the "Purpose of this Journey" is for holiday. Do not list any relatives or friends living in China. Answering in this way will expedite your visa application. Also, make sure that there are a few blank pages in your passport before sending it in. If you have run out of blank pages, it is possible to have pages added by submitting this request to the passport office where you obtained it.

For those traveling on their own

The People's Republic of China requires a current visa stamped in a valid passport, before granting entry to any foreign national. You can apply for a visa from the Chinese Embassy or any of the Consulates listed below. Visit their websites for forms and detailed instructions. The first step will be to fill out an application form and get a passport-size photo. You can get these made in any Walgreen's, AAA travel offices, and many U.S. Post Offices. After completing the form, send it, your photo, and valid passport, to any of the addresses listed below according to the instructions listed on their website. To be safe, it is best to send the completed application at least 30 days before your departure, though embassies in the United States can usually turn them around in a week.
